Red Carpet Inspired Glamour and Velvet Dreams

As a designer, I am most inspired by red carpet looks and the glamour of timeless gowns worn on the Hollywood screen by fashion icons such as Audrey Hepburn or styles tracing back to the 1920’s-1940’s. Several months ago when sourcing material from Italy, I fell in love with the softest velvet I’ve ever touched.

I began a love affair with Italian velvet.

Originally, I planned on making a long blazer with this “rose-inspired” accent on the shoulder. However, once I held the velvet against my figure, I couldn’t help but imagine a glamours plunge neckline gown. Once I began draping the material to my dress form, I knew exactly the direction I was going in. For several days I’ve dreamed of this rose-inspired accent - I just didn’t know where it would go.

To say the construction of this dress was experimental is an understatement to say the least. Typically, I like to draw things out first or follow a similar path from a previous design, but this dress challenged me in exciting new ways unlike before.

I love navigating new territory in designing. It’s the best part of my job.

Construction began with arranging the front bodice out of two pieces of velvet equally measured and shaped. The back of the neckline (not pictured) is held together with a single double layered strap. The most challenging part of the process was making the two front pieces identical in drapery and pleating. Keeping the waistline a perfect horizontal line is always crucial to the draping and construction process.

Putting on the final finished gown was humbling. Velvet with this softness and profound silkiness to it is truly breathtaking. I felt like I was gliding across the floor as I walked; the gown is extremely lightweight and comfortable to wear. Making this dress took about 5-6 hours in total but mainly because it was fun to try different thing in terms of construction. The back of the dress has an exposed back down to the waistline.
